The AMD Foundation selected the World Wide Workshop as a partner in their Changing the Game initiative. Globaloria will be customized and integrated into the daily curriculum of The East Austin College Prep Academy, a new charter school established by Southwest Key in 2009 in Texas. "We are thrilled to partner with AMD and Southwest Key to continue to transform education using game design. We teach students the new reading and writing of multimedia educational games" says Idit Harel Caperton.

On May 5th the Foundation and the WV Department of Education (WVDE) met to begin planning Globaloria’s integration into the WV public school system over the next two years. We established several working groups tasked with aligning Globaloria with WVDE content standards and 21st century skills and objectives. Monica Beane, Assistant Director, WVDE Office of Instruction, was appointed as the Globaloria coordinator. Our primary goal is to establish a model for large-scale educational transformation, infusing the public school system with innovative 21st-century teaching and learning.

3. WV Students Create over 130 Games in Pilot Year 2

First Lady Gayle Manchin with Charles, a Globaloria graduate from Clay High School

This year, 356 Globaloria students worked in teams and individually to create a total of 132 games. Students at the participating schools around West Virginia presented their original games to peers, educators, parents and Foundation experts in May. First Lady Gayle Manchin commented, "I see this as a major accomplishment for these students. It is the culmination of 12 months of concentrated learning, creative thinking, and problem solving. Many students told us they encountered real challenges while creating their games. However, their presentations are a demonstration of their successes and a chance to celebrate the vision of this project." See a slideshow of students presenting their games.

4. Student Games Presented at the 6th Annual Games for Change Festival

On May 28th, Globaloria student games were featured at the 2009 EXPO of the Games for Change Festival (G4C) in New York City. G4C is the only festival dedicated to the exciting new movement of Digital Games for Social Change. "This was an incredible opportunity to showcase the value of youth making games for learning, not just playing them," reflected Amber Oliver, "we see many opportunities to partner with the G4C community to transform our nation’s education through games, and we look forward to doing this together."
