1. Globaloria Student Wins National Flash Competition in Nashville, TN
Globaloria student, Valerie Malcolmb, a Senior from Elkins WV, has been named the WV State Champion of Computer Game and Simulation Programming by the Future Business Leaders of America, host of a variety of business competitions both state wide and on a national level. Winning first place and scoring high marks on Flash skills and presentation in the WV competition in March brought Valerie to nationals on July in Nashville, Tennessee where she competed against 39 other student finalists from across the country. Her impressive performance earned her 6th place in the top 10 young Flash designers in the nation—making her the only female to rank (and one of the only two females to enter the competition). With such a dearth of young women entering S.T.E.M. vocations, Valerie’s accomplishment demonstrates the power of Globaloria to transform young women’s attitudes about S.T.E.M. thinking. “I've always known I wanted to pursue a career in the field of game design, but I was hesitant to chase after my dream because I didn't really know what creating a game entailed," states Valerie. "Through Globaloria classes at my high school, I developed the skills and talents necessary to create Flash games. To my surprise, I enjoyed the game creation process immensely, and my skills have even surpassed all but five others in the nation!” Valerie’s game, "Save the World FBLA Style!" is a scrolling adventure game set in space.
2. Woman on a Mission! Idit Leads a Session at DLDWomen in Munich, Germany Foundation President and Founder, Idit Harel Caperton, hosted the closing panel for the first annual DLDwomen held on June 10-11. The DLD team honored the “Female Decade” by bringing together influential, forward-thinking and dynamic women in digital technology, advertising, publishing, industrial design and the arts from around the world. Idit’s panel focused on personal and inspiring stories of path-breaking women. “It was great to engage this group of capable international women, who lead mission-filled lives,” said Idit, who is herself widely regarded to be one of the first women on the mission to transform learning with technology. “I was deeply gratified to present this global network of peers who are socially-progressive and highly entrepreneurial to a wider community."
3. Foundation Documentary Series Selected as Film Festival Finalist The Foundation team is proud to announce that our documentary series, ‘Voices from the Field’ has been named a finalist in this year’s Lights. Camera. Help. film festival in Austin, Texas. Lights. Camera. Help. is the first film festival exclusively for nonprofit and cause-driven films. The Foundation has been producing learning stories and reflections of young students and their educators engage daily with the innovative social media platform Globaloria. With the help of filmmaker Andrew Watson, 32 Voices from the Field vignettes document how Globaloria students learn mathematics, science, design and engineering through conceiving and programming web-games on social issues.
“We work hard to document how Globaloria can provide economically-disadvantaged and technologically-underserved students with opportunities to expand their knowledge about technology and digital creativity, while also fostering leadership skills in their classrooms and their larger community,” says Idit. “We hope our students’ learning stories inspire decision makers in Texas and the nation to act fast to provide those children who lack role models, resources, connectivity and tools with more opportunities to participate and become economically-viable in our democratic society and the global knowledge economy.”
4. Sharing Accomplishments at Supernova in Philadelphia, PA
Idit was excited to participate in the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business’ Supernova 2010, a conference of several hundred executives, entrepreneurs, intellectuals, government officials and business practitioners. Supernova aims to connect these leaders to converse and discover the most important innovations of the 21st century. Idit spoke at Supernova’s first ever Pecha Kucha lightning talks; a Japanese presentation technique where speakers have to present their ideas in exactly 400 seconds with 20 powerpoint slides. Idit shared the World Wide Workshop’s many accomplishments in this dynamic, fast-paced, performative capacity with excitement. “It was such a delight to take part in such a dynamic conference,” exclaimed Idit. |
